2020 European Football Championship Knock Out Stages

 

euro 2020 logoWhere matches went into extra-time, teams were allowed to field a sixth substitute. The four highest ranked teams finishing third in their groups went into the Round of 16 where the draw was constructed in such a way as to keep them apart from fellow group members until the final.

The Round of 16 saw the tournament sprang to life and we witnessed some extraordinarily dramatic games. Both the European and World champions were knocked out as were the much fancied Dutch side. Italy and Spain struggled to defeat supposedly inferior opponents while England beat Germany for the first time in the finals of a major tournament since 1966.

While Welsh supporters were not permitted to travel the Dutch government announced that Danish fans would be allowed to spend up to 12 hours in Amsterdam and attend the match. Roared on by 15,000 supporters, Denmark took the lead in the 27th minute. A defensive error allowed Dolberg to make it 2-0 in the 48th minute. Wales never looked likely to recover and in the final few minutes the wheels came off as they conceded twice more and had Wilson sent off for a reckless challenge.

Italy were expected to win this one with ease but Austria proved to be difficult opponents. In fact they had the ball in the net in normal time but Arnautovic's header was ruled out by VAR for offside. Chiesa and Pessina broke the deadlock in extra time although Kalajdzic pulled it back to 2-1 to set up a nerve-wracking finale.

The Czech team pulled off the first major shock of the tournament, overpowering the much-fancied Dutch side in Budapest. The Netherlands lost De Ligt ten minutes into the second-half, sent off for deliberate handball following a VAR review. Ten minutes later Holes headed the Czechs into the lead. With ten minutes to go Holes pounced on a loose ball in midfield and powered his way into the penalty area where he cut the ball neatly back for Schick to finish.

A stunning strike from 25 yards by Thorgan Hazard proved sufficient to knock out the title holders. Although Portugal dominated posession and had no fewer than 23 shots on goal compared to 4 from the Belgians, the Red Devils did just enough to see out the match.

Croatia took the lead in the 20th minute in bizarre fashion when the Spanish goalkeeper, Simon failed to control a long back pass that passed under his foot and into goal. Spain rallied with Sarabia equalising in the 38th minute while Azpilicueta and Torres made it 3-1 with 13 minutes to go. Croatia finally came to life and in a remarkable spell they drew level in injury-time. In extra time Morata (100') and Oyarzabel (103') restored Spain's two-goal lead and although Croatia pressed hard, they could not repeat their extraordinary normal-time come back.

Severovic headed the Swiss into the lead in the 15th minute and in the second half they should have been 2-0 up but Rodriguez's penalty was saved. Moments later Benzema scored twice in as many minutes to put France ahead. When Pogba made it 3-1 with a stunning drive that curled into the top corner it should have been all over but the Swiss scored twice in the final 10 minutes to force extra-time. Coman came within inches of winning the match for France when he hit the bar with the final kick of normal time. The game went to penalties and after nine perfect strikes Mbappe's kick was saved and the World Champions were out.

Capacity at Wembley was increased to 40,000 for this game so the atmosphere was electric. The teams were evenly balanced in a tense first-half in which chances were rare although both Pickford and Neuer had to make excellent saves. In the second-half England looked the better team and in the 75th minute Sterling broke the deadlock, finishing off a rapid passing move through the German defenders that he started and finished. Moments later Muller was through on goal at the other end but he dragged his shot wide and England breathed again. Instead of sitting back England continued to counter attack and with four minutes left, Kane stooped to head home the winner from close range.

Sweden were on paper the stronger side but the match was evenly balanced. Zinchenko put Ukraine ahead with a powerful drive from close in (27') but Forsburg equalised with a long range effort that was deflected past the goalkeeper just before half-time. Both teams hit the post in the second half (Sweden twice) but there were no further goals. In the ninth minute of extra-time Danielson was sent off for a high challenge but Sweden held on with ten men and penalties seemed a certainty until Dovbyk, one of 12 substitutes used, headed a stunning winner in the 121st minute.

When Zakaria deflected Alba's shot to give Spain an early lead, it looked like the three-times European champions were well on their way but they failed to capitalise and nearly paid a heavy price. A defensive error in the 68th minute allowed Freuler to set up Shaqiri for an easy equaliser. Freuler was sent off for a tackle that was clumsy rather than malicious (77') efectively ending Switzerland's hopes for a win in open play. Spain wasted more chances in extra-time and both sides missed in the penalty shoot-out. When Vargas blasted his kick over the bar the advantage was with Spain and Oyarzarbal made no mistake with his own shot.

In an exhilarating match Italy got the better of the side ranked number one in the world. Their opener came when Belgium failed to clear, the ball came back to Barella who wriggled through the defence to score. In the 44th minute Insigne carried the ball from the half way line before curling one of the goals of the tournament in at the far post from range. In the second minute of added time in the first-half Lukaku scored from the penalty spot after di Lorenzo fouled Doku in the area. Italy continued to press their opponents in their own half after the break until the last 20 minutes, when they finally sat back and defended their lead.

Since their traumatic opening game, Denmark had gone from strength to strength in the competition and their progress continued in the blazing heat of the Azerbaijan capital. They were 2-0 up at half-time but shortly after the break, Schick volleyed home to shorten the odds. Denmark dug deep to set up a meeting with England in the semi-final.

England produced a magnificent performance that blew their opponents away. Ukraine had barely touched the ball before Kane got England off to the best possible start in the 4th minute. Seconds after the break Maguire headed home Shaw's free-kick and four minutes later, Kane headed his second from close range from another cross from Shaw. Ukraine lost heart and when Henderson headed in from a corner (63') the rout was complete.

Italy reached the final after an enthralling match but they needed penalties to do it. Chiesa opened the scoring for the Azzuri having run the length of the pitch in a fast counter-attacking move that broke down at the edge of the Spanish penalty area. He pounced on the loose ball and sent a curling drive home. With ten minutes to go Morata was put through behind the Italian defence and equalized. The teams were exhausted and there were few chances in extra-time. After Morata missed his penalty in the shoot-out Jorginho calmly sent the Spanish 'keeper the wrong way before slotting the ball into the opposite side of the goal.

A night of nerve-shredding tension ended with England in their first major final since 1966. Damsgaard gave Denmark the lead in the 30th minute with a stunning free-kick that went over the defensive wall and just beyond Pickford's reach. Just nine minutes later Kjaer turned Saka's low cross into his own net with Sterling breathing down his neck. Schmeichel made several terrific saves as England pressed for the winner while his team threatened to score on the counter. In the 103rd minute the referee awarded a penalty to England. Schmeichel saved Kane's shot but could not hold it and England's captain scored on the follow up.

England's dreams of a second major trophy came to grief in familiar cruel fashion on a feverish night of anticipation and tension. Luke Shaw got England off to the best possible start, scoring with a half-volley in the second minute. England dominated for an hour but then went to pieces as the experienced Italian side took control. A scrambled goal levelled the scores (67') and Italy looked the better side as the England players faltered. For once Gareth Southgate's tactical nous deserted him as he waited until extra-time to bring on Grealish and brought Sancho and Rashford on in the final minutes for the penalty shoot-out. Sadly both players missed from the spot.
